Although Nebbiolo is most often thought of as hailing from Barolo in the Piedmont region of Italy, just a few hours to the north in the dramatic Italian Alps of Valtellina, they grow my favorite rendition of Nebbiolo. It's with a nod towards Valtellina that we bottled our first stand alone Nebbiolo from the Sumu Kaw Vineyard in El Dorado, planted at a 3,000 foot elevation. Nebbiolo at high elevations has a crunchier fruit expression, more alive and zesty -- framed by the wild perfume of mountain chaparral. To counter the varieties infamously intense tannins, we left in on the skins for 90 days, adding a forward softness and density to the structure, while still allowing the purity of place to show through.
