Arada was the secret name for the Queen of Witches in the Islands and Highlands around the provinces of Italy in the late Medieval era. Dark and beguiling, she entranced and patroned the peasant class of Italy, teaching them magic to aid them in combating the exploitation of Feudalism. We honor Arada with our 2023 Refosco from the spectacular Lone Pine Vineyard planted at 3000’ elevation in El Dorado County. Refosco is a fascinating grape found historically in alpine regions like Friuli and Südtirol in Northeastern Italy. Refosco is clearly in the Syrah genre, but with that hard to put your finger on pallet enveloping spiced garrigue character that seems unique to Italian red varieties. The land really sings through Refosco – the minty mountain herbs, the wild berries and dried pine needles. Much like the spirit of Arada, our Refsco is deep and dark, with a richness well suited to nighttime revelries. The incense of branches from the fire waft through those beguiling black fruit aromas, and the scent of celebratory meat roasting on the pyre. Pairs well with brothy and braised greens, fork tender meat, nutty cheese, and guillotines.
